Saint Joan of Arc (1412-1431)

Heroine - Co-Patroness of France

We have always had a great love for St. Joan of Arc. We wrote a short biography on her life for our book “Martyrs, They Died for Christ.” We don’t think that short story was enough; it couldn’t begin to do justice to this powerful Saint in our Church. At that time, there were not as many avenues of information open for this Saint as there are today on the Internet. We really got to know her in a deeply personal way when we dug deeper into her life to make our television program on St. Joan of Arc for our Super Saints series on EWTN.

It was only then that we began to realize the depth and breadth of this Saint, and what influence her life and her heroism has had and continues to have on the entire world. There is a world of admirers of la Poucelle, the Maid of Lorraine, from all walks of life. She has touched a great many people, a great cross section of society. We pray that this endeavor will allow us to reach into our hearts and share with you the love and admiration we have for this Saint who was truly Maligned, Misunderstood and Mistreated. Actually, she could be a poster girl for the title of this book.

We mentioned in our first biography that Saint Joan of Arc was illiterate in that she could neither read nor write. Yet her story is so intriguing that renowned authors such as George Bernard Shaw, and Mark Twain, have written about her, each adding their own twist on who they believed she was. Then, in delving deeper into her life, we find that many films have been made about her, as well as TV spectaculars in an effort to capture the essence of this heroic woman of our Church. Religious and military organizations have set up monuments to her all over the world as well as groups who just admired her greatly. On the Internet, there are over 250,000 sites which make some reference to Joan of Arc. This was not some ordinary person. She was and continues to be a very special part of our Church, of France, and of admirers all over the world.

Bob and Penny Lord have traced the life of Saint Joan of Arc in France, from her first encounter with St. Michael the Archangel  up to her Martyrdom.
